For the 24th edition of the Ocean Initiatives, Surfrider Foundation Europe, in partnership with the advertising agency Young & Rubicam Paris, reveals its Trash Invasion campaign, 100% digital and … polluting! This European-wide campaign aims to remind the omnipresence of waste in our daily lives and promote a simple solution: the collection of waste during Ocean Initiatives.
#TrashInvasion: what is it?
The Trash Invasion campaign aims to alarm and raise awareness among the general public about the problem of marine litter. How can we mobilize the urgency to act? Surfrider has chosen an innovative and 100% digital method on one of the most popular social networks, Instagram.
For three weeks, @seeglass, @verybagnews @sweptupstraw and others have invaded the network, looking for their favorite places: beaches, streams and even the bottom of the ocean. These waste accounts have liked and commented on your pictures to simply remind you that they are everywhere. Immersed, invasive, disturbing … they have come to pollute your idyllic pictures!
In parallel, each waste account offers a different perspective in a campaign poster containing information necessary for the knowledge of the pollution they generate.
#TrashInvasion: why?
Every second, 412 kilos of waste is dumped into the oceans, 80% of which comes from the inland. Only 20% are directly abandoned on the shores or at sea. Because the problem of marine litter does not only affect the residents of the coast, Surfrider wanted to educate a larger European public.
To make a big impact, Surfrider chose Instagram, a popular network where users post pictures of heavenly landscapes. Behind the #TrashInvasion, the NGO calls for action. Surfrider invites you to participate in the 24th edition of Ocean Initiatives, a flagship waste collection program. Through this communication campaign the NGO Surfrider Foundation Europe and the advertising agency Young & Rubicam Paris wish to remind the public of the urgency to act in order to no longer be invaded by marine waste!
For over 25 years, Surfrider has been fighting to stop the massive pollution of the oceans. To contribute, participate in a collective cleaning of beaches, lakes, rivers, sea-beds, near you! Beyond the simple gesture of collection, the goal is to raise awareness and make the public understand the issues related to this pollution.
